A contemporary critic said of Among the Mongols by James Gilmour, "Robinson Crusoe has turned missionary, lived years in Mongolia, and wrote a book about it." James Gilmour's account of some of his experiences in Mongolia and his explanations of Mongolian culture are certainly an interesting read. From the one meal a day eaten by Mongols to the proper means of approaching a tent so as not to be eaten by dogs, from the Mongol justice system to their version of Aesop's fables, 19th century Mongolia was a fascinating place.
